Did you know... clothing is piling up in landfills at an alarming rate. The fast fashion industry, overproduction, and overconsumption of cheap disposable clothing are responsible for tons of textile waste, land, air, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. 16.9 million tons of used textile wastes are generated each year in the United States. That amount has doubled over the last 20. The average American throws away 70 pounds of clothing every year.
Learn to repair your clothes instead and be a part of the Solution!

Most people by now know about 'Earth Day' as we just celebrated the 50th Anniversary. But have you heard about World Environment Day?
The United Nations' principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. First held in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging from environmental issues to marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime. World Environment Day has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, WED has a new theme that major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments and all celebrities worldwide adopt to advocate environmental causes. This years theme, Together we can act #ForNature.
We are rightfully concerned about the effects of plastic pollution in our global community. To spread awareness of this environmental and human rights threat, We're participating in a grassroots screening tour of The Story of Plastic , a documentary by The Story of Stuff
Project . The film is an expose uncovering the ugly truth behind the current global
plastic pollution crisis. Striking footage shot over three continents illustrates the ongoing catastrophe: fields full of garbage, veritable mountains of trash; rivers and seas clogged with waste; and skies choked with the poisonous runoff from plastic production and recycling processes with no end in sight. Original animations, interviews with experts and
activists, and never-before-filmed scenes reveal the disastrous consequences of the flood of plastic smothering ecosystems and poisoning communities around the world – and the global movement rising up in response.

Due to the continued stay at home orders we aren’t able to gather physically to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. However,
staying at home presents an opportunity for more flexibility to celebrate Earth Day in your own way. There are so many ways to celebrate and below I will present a few suggestions options that have come to my attention recently. My hope it that this 50th anniversary we will start a new phase of our conscious behavior where we think AND act as if Every Day is Earth Day!
GET OUTSIDE AND ENJOY THE NATURAL WORLD- There’s no better way to understand the importance of what we are protecting than spending time in the beauty of nature. We are so blessed here in the Black Hills to have so many places to choose from. Take it one step further perhaps engaging in an activity to commemorate such as picking up litter on your walk, planting a tree or build a bird or pollinator house. Take pictures of your outings and share how you celebrated Earth Day on social media. Remember to use a creative #EARTHDAY hashtag. AND On May 9-23rd join Keep Hot Springs Beautiful Great American Clean- up. For details go to http://keephotspringsbeautiful.org/great-american-clean-up
BE CREATIVE WITH EARTH DAY THEME: Write a poem, a story, a song, or do some art based on your experience outdoors or what ever inspirations you have & share with friends and/or on social media with your favorite Earth day hashtag. My new inspiration was to create postcards from repurposed paperboard and magazines to send to friends and family.
